SEASON 1 / Episode 6: The Future Of Architecture

How will COVID-19 change the design of your home?

COVID 19 is affecting our everyday life! More preventative measures are being put in place as we learn more about the virus. The way we enter and roam through grocery stores is different; the way we sit at restaurants has changed—even our home has evolved into the hippest place to stay in all day long. We are no longer leaving our homes for work or a source of social interaction; we are getting reacquainted with our living space. It's no longer a stranger and just not a place to rest our heads a night. Will any of these changes that we have implemented in our home life and commercial spaces be here to stay?

As we design and build new commercial and residential spaces, will we see different plans that are more COVID friendly? Even though scientists worldwide hope to get rid of COVID soon, there is still a chance the world will experience more pandemics in the future. The installation of plexiglass at restaurants and businesses may be here to stay. A design element might evolve from this pandemic. We might start to see trendy looking protective barriers and covered pods at commercial businesses. These measures might still be in our establishments for years to come, but we won't notice them because they will complement the space's design instead of quickly placed in the room to get back to "business as usual."

In episode 6, I take a deep dive into how COVID-19 will transform our homes' shape in years to come! Find out in the next episode of COVID-19 when I interview Kathy Yuen owner of the architectural firm Phase One Design. We discuss what rooms people will eliminate from their homes and what spaces her clients will need more than ever. Please find out how Kathy is pivoting her business to help keep Phase One Design thriving during these unprecedented times.
